Almost a decade ago researchers predicted that there would be less usage of paper in the future and that would soon lead to a paperless society. However, all predictions have turned out to be nothing more than a dream. Improvements in Information Technology and Communication techniques such as computers, printers, and fax machines have made us more reliant on paper. This has resulted in an increased demand for paper that is used for printing photos, web content, etc.

Printing this material on paper is not only devastating for trees, but the empty printer cartridges have raised serious problems for the environment. Going by the stats more than a thousands empty cartridges are thrown away every day in United Arab Emirates, in worldwide annually somewhere around 400 million empty cartridges find there way into landfills. This number includes around 280 million inkjet cartridges and 120 million toner cartridges. This waste contributes to about 400 million pounds of solid waste to our landfills.
Printer cartridges contain plastic, metal, rubber, and many such compounds which by no means can be termed eco-friendly. Plastic takes around 1000 years to decompose while other materials might take hundreds of years. Adding to more troubles is the production process of these cartridges. Each cartridge requires two and a half ounces of oil and each toner cartridge requires 3 quarts of oil to manufacture them.

If we recycle just 10% more printer cartridges, 40 million less cartridges would go into landfills. This means the greenhouse gas emissions will be less by about 100 million pounds, which is equivalent to taking 20,000 cars off the road for one year.
